Frequently Asked Questions

Electric Vehicle Charging FAQs

A home EV charger installation can cost anywhere from $750 to more than $3000. In the US, the average price is $1,300, but yours may cost more if your home’s setup is more complicated than average. The main factors that impact your price are your electrical panel’s capacity, the brand of panel you have, and the distance between your panel and your charger location.

The best way to determine whether or not your EV charger installation requires an electrical permit is to contact your local municipal office or building department. Many municipalities will have this information posted online for easy homeowner access. Additionally, your state’s administrative code will mention if permitting is required for electrical work in your area.

At Charge Pro, we help you through the whole permitting process. We boast a 100% passing record on all permitted EV charger projects inside Austin city limits.

If you have a more complicated project or want to install charging for multiple vehicles, please make sure you include it in the “what else would you like us to know?” section of our contact form, or message us with the additional information after you’ve filled out the request form.

Our inside operations team will help you through any utility rebates that are applicable to your project. Please note that not all utilities provide rebates and that funds are not always guaranteed to be available. Charge Pro does not prepare any federal tax credit forms; we advise you consult with an account or tax preparation form for guidance on these.

Backup Power FAQs

No you don’t! While having solar panels will extend the capacity of your battery system during an prolonged grid outage, it’s not necessary. If you do not have solar panels, the battery system will only charge from the grid. So, during a grid outage, you’ll want to carefully monitor your battery’s state of charge, as the battery will not be able to recharge until the grid is restored. The advantage of having solar panels integrated with a battery is that your solar panels can recharge the batteries even when the grid is down!

The duration your power stays on during a grid outage with a battery backup depends on several factors, including the number and capacity of the batteries installed, the typical power consumption of your household or devices, and the efficiency of the backup system. Charge Pro designs every battery system with the needs of each customer in mind, so our first step would be a conversation to determine your specific goals and an analysis of your home’s current power consumption patterns.

Whether a generator or a battery backup is better depends on your specific needs, use case, and priorities. Fixed generators can run for days as long as the fuel source is available. They’re also usually more cost-effective, especially for whole-home solutions, when compared to battery backups. However, generators will require more maintenance over time and can be quite noisy. Battery backups, while expensive, are very quiet and can kick on almost instantaneously, which is important for some customers with highly sensitive electronics onsite. If you already have solar panels at your residence, adding a battery backup likely makes the most sense. The good news is, Charge Pro installs both batteries and generators, so we’re prepared to help you make the right decision!
