Charging and backup power, in town and out on the land

In San Antonio, most jobs look like anywhere else: a charger in the garage, a few feet from the panel. Out in the Hill Country it’s often a different job, with a detached garage or a metal shop, a long trench through rock, a well pump and a co-op meter.

We plan for that up front. Long runs, subpanels in a shop, propane generators and backup that keeps the well running are all normal work for us.

One licensed crew for charging and backup power, so the charger, the battery and the panel work are planned together.

San Antonio and Hill Country know-how

One trip can cross three utilities and two counties. Here’s what changes the job.

Your utility

CPS Energy and the co-ops

Inside San Antonio it’s CPS Energy. Around it are city utilities and electric co-ops, each with its own rules for service upgrades, batteries and solar. A charger works the same on any of them, and we handle the paperwork for the rest.

  • CPS Energy
  • New Braunfels Utilities
  • Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC)
  • Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC)
  • Central Texas Electric Cooperative
  • Kerrville Public Utility Board
  • Bandera Electric Cooperative

Permits

City limits and county land

Inside San Antonio, permits go through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department. New Braunfels, Boerne, Fredericksburg and Kerrville run their own. Out in the county, many properties don’t need an electrical permit at all, and we install to the same code either way.

Hill Country properties

Rock, distance and wells

Limestone makes trenching slower, and a shop 200 feet from the house means a bigger wire and often a subpanel. For backup, we size generators and batteries to keep the well pump and septic running, and install propane generators where there’s no natural gas.

Pricing

What a home charger install costs

Almost all of it is distance. In town most installs land in the first two columns. Shops and detached garages out on the land are usually in the third.

Up to 10 ft

$800

Panel in the garage, charger on a nearby wall.

10 to 50 ft

$1,300

Across the garage, through an attic, or around a corner.

50 ft and up

$2,000+

Detached garage, a second-story run, or a trench.

Typical installs. Prices don’t include the charger, permits, panel upgrades or load management, and assume your panel can carry a Level 2 charger. Need a charger? We’ll add one from stock to your quote.

I received quotes from three different electric vehicle (EV) charger installation companies. Charge Pro stood out as the easiest and most straightforward option. They didn’t engage in upselling, such as memberships, and offered very competitive pricing. The entire process, from obtaining the quote to the installation and payment, was seamless. The two electricians they dispatched were friendly, professional, and did an excellent job. They provided clear explanations, assisted me in setting up the app, and left the work area spotless. Based on this positive experience, I will definitely call Charge Pro for any future electrical needs.

San Antonio and Hill Country questions

Can you run a charger to a detached garage or shop?

Yes. Long runs are normal for us. Depending on the distance, we trench or bore, size the wire for the run and often add a subpanel in the shop. These jobs usually price in the 50 ft and up range, and we’ll quote it exactly from your photos or a site visit.

Do you install propane generators?

Yes. We install Generac and Kohler standby generators on propane or natural gas. Licensed gas partners handle the gas connection, and our electricians do all the electrical work.

Can backup power keep my well pump running?

Yes, if it’s sized for it. Well pumps pull a big surge when they start, so we size the generator or battery around the pump, along with the fridge, lights and anything else you need.

Do you travel to Fredericksburg, Kerrville and Bandera?

Yes. We work from San Antonio out through the Hill Country. Send your address with the form and we’ll confirm.

Does CPS Energy have programs for EV owners?

CPS Energy has run programs for EV drivers, including off-peak charging rewards. Programs change, so check CPS Energy’s EV page for what’s current. Our prices don’t depend on any of them.
