If you ordered a new Tesla Model 3 or Model Y on or after October 1, 2026, the car in your garage can now help power your home during an outage. Tesla calls the feature Powershare Home Backup, and it works alongside a Powerwall 3 home battery.
For Texas homeowners, that is a big deal. Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and Hurricane Beryl in 2024 left millions of Texans without power for days. A typical Model 3 or Model Y battery holds roughly five to six times the energy of a single Powerwall 3. Pairing the two turns your driveway into a serious backup power source.
Below, we break down what Tesla announced, which cars qualify, what equipment you need at home, how long the backup really lasts, and how it fits with Tesla’s new Powerwall lease in Texas.
What Tesla announced
On October 6, 2026, Tesla expanded Powershare Home Backup from the Cybertruck to the Model 3 and Model Y. Every new Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026 is Powershare-capable.
- Vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup. During an outage, the car sends stored energy to the house through the Wall Connector, working alongside the Powerwall.
- Up to 11.52 kW of output. That is enough to run most of a typical home’s everyday loads at once.
- Powerwall 3 required. The Powerwall system, through its Gateway or Backup Switch, handles the backup switching and safely isolates the home from the grid.
- No separate Powershare Gateway. With a Powerwall 3 system and a Wall Connector, Tesla says no additional Powershare hardware is needed.
- Software enabled. The feature is turned on through software rather than new parts in the car.
Does my Tesla qualify?
If you ordered your Model 3 or Model Y on or after October 1, 2026, yes. Tesla guarantees Powershare support for every U.S. order from that date forward.
Some cars built before that date also qualify, because they already carry the needed onboard power hardware. Not all of them do, so check before you plan around it.
How to check your car in 30 seconds
- In your car, open Software.
- Tap Additional Vehicle Information.
- Look for a line that says Powershare Support.
If you see it, your car has the hardware. Once your equipment is installed, you will need to contact Tesla support to have Powershare turned on.
What you need at home
You need three things working together as one system: a qualifying car, a Powerwall 3, and a Tesla Wall Connector, all correctly paired.
Powerwall 3
The brain of the setup. Together with its Gateway or Backup Switch, it detects the outage, disconnects your home from the grid, and manages power from both the battery and the car. Without it, the Model 3 and Model Y cannot back up your home.
Tesla Wall Connector
The car sends power back through it. Tesla supports a Universal Wall Connector or a supported Gen 3 Wall Connector. A third-party charger or basic outlet will not work.
Correct pairing
The Powerwall and Wall Connector must be on the same Tesla energy site and paired to each other. If they are not, Powershare will not work.
Why Tesla’s approach is simpler: it runs on AC
Powershare works over AC. The car’s own onboard electronics convert its battery power into standard 240-volt AC and send it back through the Wall Connector, the same path it already uses to charge. That output is rated at 11.52 kW continuous and certified to the UL 1741 grid-safety standard.
Many other vehicle-to-home systems work over DC instead. That typically means a dedicated bidirectional DC charger, a separate inverter and extra backup hardware on your wall. With a Powerwall 3 system, Tesla says the car needs nothing beyond a Wall Connector: no extra inverter, no Powershare Gateway and no communication wiring between the charger and the Powerwall.
Why installation matters
Powershare uses your charger as a two-way power path, so the install has to be right. Tesla’s installation guidance calls for the Wall Connector’s breaker to sit on the backed-up side of your Powerwall system, so it stays live during an outage. It also means a properly sized circuit and commissioning so both devices show up on the same energy site.
If you already have a Powerwall 3 but your charger is a plug-in unit or a non-Tesla brand, a Wall Connector upgrade is likely your next step. If you have a Wall Connector but no Powerwall, you will need the battery before Powershare can back up your home.
How much backup you actually get
Tesla says a Model 3 or Model Y charged to 90% can add about two days of backup for a home using 30 kWh per day. That is on top of what your Powerwall 3 already stores (13.5 kWh usable).
| Usable energy | What it means | |
|---|---|---|
| Powerwall 3 alone | 13.5 kWh | Roughly half a day at 30 kWh/day |
| Model 3 / Model Y | About 5–6× a Powerwall 3 | About 2 days at 30 kWh/day (Tesla estimate, 90% charge) |
| Max output from the car | 11.52 kW | Can carry most everyday household loads at once |
The Powerwall is the engine. Your car is the gas tank.
The car adds runtime, not extra power. The Powerwall runs the house first and handles big loads like your AC starting up, and the car keeps it supplied so it lasts much longer. Reports on the same Powerwall 3 setup with the Cybertruck say total output stays capped at about 11.5 kW combined.
Yes, it can run your central AC. Powerwall 3 is built to handle motor starts like an AC compressor, and adding a soft start to your AC makes startup even easier on the system.
Need more power at once? Each Powerwall 3 has its own built-in inverter, so the output adds up. Two Powerwall 3s give you about 23 kW of continuous power, enough for central AC plus other large appliances at the same time.
The Texas reality check
Thirty kilowatt-hours a day is a mild-weather number. In a Texas August, central AC can push a home well past that, so your backup will run shorter. In a winter outage with electric heat, the same is true.
You can stretch it a long way by being smart about loads during an outage:
- Keep the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi, fans and phone charging running.
- Run the AC at a higher setpoint, or cool one zone instead of the whole house.
- Hold off on the dryer, electric oven and pool pump until the grid is back.
- Keep the car charged higher ahead of storm season, and especially before a forecast storm.
Tesla’s Texas Powerwall lease and virtual power plant
In August 2026, Tesla launched a Powerwall lease in Texas that makes the Powerwall 3 requirement much easier to meet. It pairs two leased Powerwall 3 batteries with the Tesla Electric Backup retail electricity plan.
| Upfront | A one-time $100 order fee. Tesla covers a standard installation. |
| Monthly | $122 per month in the first year, minus an $87 monthly credit for eligible Tesla Electric customers. That nets out to $35 per month plus tax. |
| The trade-off | Tesla manages the batteries as part of its Texas virtual power plant (VPP). It charges them when power is cheap and discharges them when the grid needs it. |
| Your backup | Tesla keeps at least 20% in reserve for outages, the full battery is available when the grid goes down, and Storm Watch charges the batteries to full ahead of severe weather. |
Because the lease uses two Powerwall 3s, it lines up with what Powershare needs. Two Powerwall 3s give you 27 kWh of stored energy and can deliver about 23 kW of power at once, before the car adds anything. Pair a leased system with a qualifying Model 3 or Model Y and a Wall Connector, and you have a battery-plus-car backup setup for very little upfront cost. Eligibility is limited, so confirm with Tesla that your address and setup qualify.
Where VPPs are headed
For Model 3 and Model Y owners, only the Powerwall takes part in Tesla’s Texas VPP today. The cars’ Powershare feature is backup-only, so they cannot send power to the grid or earn compensation yet.
Tesla is already paying some Texas drivers for car-to-grid power, though. In February 2026 it launched Powershare Grid Support for Cybertruck owners in CenterPoint and Oncor areas, which covers the Houston and Dallas metros. Enrolled trucks send power to the grid during high-demand events, and owners earn credits on their electric bills. The program is invitation-only for now, and Tesla says it plans to expand access.
If grid programs like this reach the Model 3 and Model Y, owners with Powershare-ready cars and properly installed Wall Connectors will be first in line.
Add solar and you have a true energy island
Powershare gets even more powerful when you add solar panels. Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in, so it is designed to work directly with rooftop solar.
Solar
Produces power during the day and recharges your Powerwall, even when the grid is down.
Powerwall 3
Stores that energy, runs your home overnight and manages the whole system during an outage.
Model 3 or Model Y
Adds days of extra stored energy on top, covering cloudy stretches and heavy loads.
Without solar, your backup ends when the batteries run dry. With solar refilling the Powerwall every sunny day, a multi-day outage becomes far more manageable. For Texas homeowners tired of depending on the grid, solar, Powerwall and a Powershare-ready Tesla are about as close to energy independence as a home can get.
If solar is on your list for the future, a Powershare-ready setup today is a smart first step. The Powerwall 3 you install now is the same one your panels will connect to later.
What it doesn’t do (yet)
Powershare on the Model 3 and Model Y is a strong first step, but it has limits worth knowing before you buy.
- Home backup only, not vehicle-to-grid. The car powers your house during an outage. It does not sell power back to the grid.
- Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ are not supported yet. Tesla says support is planned, but for now Powerwall 3 is required.
- No Powerwall-free option. The Cybertruck can back up a home with a Universal Wall Connector and a separate Powershare Gateway. The Model 3 and Model Y cannot.
- Older cars are hit or miss. Only some pre-October 2026 builds have the hardware.
- U.S. and Puerto Rico only. The feature has not launched in other markets.
Powershare vs. a standby generator vs. adding solar
The right backup depends on how long your outages last and what you need to keep running. Here is how the main options compare.
| Tesla Powershare (Model 3/Y + Powerwall 3) | Home standby generator (Generac, Kohler) | Powershare + solar (Model 3/Y + Powerwall 3 + panels) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel source | Car battery + Powerwall | Natural gas or propane | The sun, stored in your Powerwall and car |
| How long it runs | Days, limited by battery and usage | As long as fuel is supplied | Recharges every sunny day, so it can carry you through extended outages |
| Noise and emissions | Silent, no emissions | Engine noise, exhaust | Silent, no emissions |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Regular service and exercise cycles | Minimal |
| Home equipment needed | Powerwall 3 with Gateway or Backup Switch + Tesla Wall Connector | Generator + transfer switch | Powerwall 3 with Gateway or Backup Switch + Tesla Wall Connector + solar panels |
| Best for | Tesla owners who want quiet, clean backup | Very long outages, especially stretches with little sun | Homeowners who want the most energy independence |
Many Texas homeowners do not have to choose just one. A generator covers week-long outages, while a battery-and-car setup handles the shorter, more common ones silently. Add solar, and your batteries refill every sunny day. We install Tesla Wall Connectors, GM Energy V2H systems and Generac and Kohler standby generators, so we can help you find the right mix for your home.

Frequently asked questions
Can my Tesla Model Y power my house?
Yes, if it was ordered on or after October 1, 2026, or if it is an earlier build that shows Powershare Support in its software. You also need a Powerwall 3 and a Universal Wall Connector or supported Gen 3 Wall Connector.
Do I need a Powerwall to use Powershare on a Model 3 or Model Y?
Yes. Unlike the Cybertruck, the Model 3 and Model Y currently require a Powerwall 3 for home backup.
Does it work with Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+?
Not yet. Tesla says support is planned, but it has not given a date.
How long can my car power my home?
Tesla estimates about two days for a home using 30 kWh per day, with the car at 90% charge. Heavy AC or electric heat use will shorten that.
Will Powershare drain my car so I can’t drive?
No. You can set a limit in the car for how much of the battery Powershare is allowed to use, so you keep the range you need. You can also unplug and drive away, and the Powerwall keeps running the house.
Can the car and Powerwall together run more than 11.5 kW?
No. The car extends how long your backup lasts, not how much power you can use at once. To run more at the same time, add a second Powerwall 3, which brings you to about 23 kW.
Can I sell power from my car back to the grid?
Not yet. Powershare on the Model 3 and Model Y is home backup only. Tesla does run a vehicle-to-grid program, Powershare Grid Support, for Cybertruck owners in the Houston and Dallas areas, so it could expand to more models later.
Will a leased Tesla Powerwall work with Powershare?
Tesla’s Texas lease includes two Powerwall 3 batteries, which is the model Powershare requires. Confirm your specific eligibility with Tesla.
Can any electrician install the Wall Connector for Powershare?
Powershare depends on the Wall Connector and Powerwall being wired and paired correctly. A Tesla Certified Installer knows the equipment and the setup process.
