What is vehicle-to-home?
Most EVs only take power in. Bidirectional charging lets the car send power back out. Where that power goes is what the different terms mean.
What you need at home
Every vehicle-to-home system is built from the same few pieces. The car decides which version of each you need.
A V2H-capable car
Not every EV can send power back out yet. We’ll check your make, model and year before anything else.
A bidirectional charger
The charger that fills the car also carries power back to the house. Each car maker has its own, so a standard charger or outlet won’t do it.
A gateway or home hub
Installed at your main panel. It senses an outage, disconnects your home from the grid and lets the car take over safely.
A home battery, if you want one
Some systems need one and others make it optional. Either way, a home battery like the GM Energy PowerBank or Tesla Powerwall 3 pairs with the car and covers the house when the car is out.
Your options
We install both of the leading vehicle-to-home systems. Which one fits comes down to the car in your garage.

What it can run
The car decides how long your backup lasts. The system’s output decides how much can run at the same time.
We size your backup from your panel and your usage, and set it up as whole-home or partial depending on what you want running. Whole-home vs partial backup, explained
How long will it keep the house running?
Longer than most outages last. A charged EV can typically run a home for a day or more, and often several, depending on the battery and how much you use.
Even better with a home battery and solar
Your car adds days of stored energy. A home battery and solar round it out.
Home battery
Covers the house the instant the grid drops, even when the car is out on the road.
Solar
Panels recharge your batteries every sunny day, so a long outage is much easier to ride out. We work with a solar partner if you need panels.
Grid programs
Car makers and Texas utilities are starting to pay EV owners to send power to the grid at peak times. A V2H setup puts you first in line as they grow.
What’s included in the install
Equipment check
We confirm your car, your panel and your service size support the system before you buy anything.
Charger on the right circuit
The charger goes on a properly sized circuit, wired so it carries power both ways.
Gateway or home hub
Installed at your main panel to isolate the house from the grid during an outage, wired by our own electricians.
Permits and inspection
We pull the permits where they’re required and meet the inspector. If the inspection fails, we fix it at our cost.
Setup and pairing
We commission the system and pair the charger, gateway and any home battery so they work as one.
Test and walkthrough
We run a test switchover with your car and show you how to set your backup limit and what to expect in an outage.

What customers say
Vehicle-to-home questions
Can my EV power my house?
If it supports vehicle-to-home and you have the right equipment, yes. Today that includes the Tesla Cybertruck, newer Model 3 and Model Y, and V2H-capable GM EVs from Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac. Tell us what you drive and we’ll confirm.
Do I need a home battery too?
It depends on the car. GM Energy V2H and the Cybertruck run without one, and many owners add one anyway: a GM Energy PowerBank or a Tesla Powerwall 3. Model 3 and Model Y pair with a Powerwall 3. A home battery covers the house when the car isn’t there.
Will it drain my car so I can’t drive?
No. You set a limit on how much of the battery the house can use, and backup stops there, so you always keep the range you need.
Can it run my central AC?
Usually one unit, yes. A soft start on the AC helps a lot. Two large AC units at once can be more than one system carries, so we size it from your panel and usage.
Can I use the charger I already have?
Only if it’s the bidirectional charger your car’s system uses. A standard charger or outlet can’t send power back to the house. We’ll tell you if yours can stay.
Can I sell power from my car back to the grid?
Not widely yet. Early vehicle-to-grid programs are starting in Texas, and more are coming. A vehicle-to-home setup gets you ready for them.
What does vehicle-to-home cost?
It depends on your car, the equipment it needs and your panel. We quote the complete job from your photos, with nothing left out.
